Henry Acres - Program Director

Henry “Hank” Acres is a former professional hockey player and current Assistant Coach of the Dunaujvarosi Acelbirak (SteelBulls) in Hungary for 2011-12. He started his hockey journey with Parksville's own Generals Junior club before moving onto the BCHL, college and pro hockey.

After a highly successful college career, culminating in a Canadian Championship. Henry has embarked on a world wide professional career that has seen him lace'em up with teams from Florida, Michigan, and Virginia in the USA, a Championship in Australia, a very busy season in Finland, and six years in Sweden.

Since starting AHT in 2003, he has taken his programs to Sweden and Finland and is currently planning further expansion in these 2 hockey loving nations.

Henry has worked as a coach mentor with Tuuski Hockey in Finland, helping to develop coaches and male/female players at all levels in that organization. He also served as Assistant Coach with Kiekko-Vantaa in Finland's Mestis Pro league specializing on defensemen development that same season. The Finnish Hockey Association enlisted Henry to help with youth player evualuations for the U16 National Team and defenseman development during his time in Finland also.

Henry has played competitive hockey for over 20 years and has achieved many successes on a personal and team level at all levels of hockey. From minor hockey up thru junior and college to the professional ranks Henry has shown the heart and mind of a champion along with the hardware to prove it!

Hank enjoys working with young people and sharing his passion for hockey with the future of the game. Henry is a NCCP Level 2 certified coach curently working on his High Performance level certification thru BC Hockey and Hockey Canada.  Prior to AHT he was a hockey school instructor at Mount Royal College Hockey School in Calgary, Alberta and a hockey and skating instructor with Recreation Oak Bay in Victoria, British Columbia.

Henry was assistant trainer with Arborga Hockey's gymnasium program in Sweden. This is a high school level Phys-Ed equivalent for top players in the city. Henry continued to work with player development in Sweden during the 2010-11 season with Asploven HC.

Henry started Acres Hockey Training to give developing hockey players some real insight into what kind of desire, focus, and training it takes to make the dream of a career in hockey a reality.

Henry resides in beautiful Qualicum Beach, B.C. during the off season, enjoying the many amenities this wondrous area has to offer.


Jesse Dorrans - Lead Instructor

Acres Hockey Training is proud to have Jesse Dorrans on board as a lead instructor. Coach Dorrans brings a wealth of knowledge to every session and has been an invaluable member of our team, both in Canada and Finland.

Jesse is back coaching with the Castlegar Rebels, members of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Jesse previously has been Head Coach of the Grand Forks Border Bruins (KIJHL), Assistant GM/Coach of the Castlegar Rebels (KIJHL) and with the Vancouver Thunderbirds Minor Hockey Association for 4 seasons at the Pee Wee and Bantam levels.

Coach Dorrans has a long hockey-playing background beginning in Chetwynd, B.C before heading south to a true interior hockey hotbed of Williams Lake and played the majority of his minor hockey with that organization. At the completion of Jesse's minor hockey career he made the trek to the Island to begin studies at Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo.

While continuing his studies Jesse enhanced his hockey playing career with the VIJHL's Parksville Generals and finished out his junior playing days with the Victoria Salsa of the BCHL.

Outside hockey Coach Dorransy is a huge Boston Red Sox's fan. Jesse resides in Castlegar, B.C.


Todd Norman-Lead Instructor

Todd joined AHT in 2009 and did a fantastic job running the schools in 2009.

The 1995 5th Round pick of the Vancouver Canucks, attended 3 NHL Training Camps, was a big time scorer for the Guelph Storm in the OHL, before playing in the AHL, ECHL, CHL, CIS and Europe.

Todd graduated from St. FX University in Halifax and is a teacher and Coach in Ontario. We look fwd to Todd's continued involvement with AHT.



Jesse Shiels-Lead Instructor

AHT is very excited to welcome Jesse to our team!

Jesse is currently an assistant coach with the Dawson Creek Rage of the NAHL. Jesse is a former Cowichan Valley Capital who's promising playing career was halted due to injury. Since then he has focused on his coaching career and is well on his way to a bright future as a coach.

Jesse will be assisting Henry during D-Man/Goalie Specialty Clinics and all the Bringing Smart Play to Hockey programs offered in 2011.

Jesse is an island boy from Nanaimo, BC.



Brian Passmore-Lead Instructor

AHT is equally thrilled to welcome Brian Passmore to our team in 2012!

Brian brings a huge amount of hockey experince to our team. A former Minnesota Wild Draft pick in 2000, Brian has played in the OHL, CIS, ECHL, and CHL in North America. He has also suited up in England, Norway and Switzerland.

Since retiring as a player in 2009, Passmore has moved to Victoria and been involved with Saanich Minor Hockey as a Head Coach at the Bantam level. He has also been the lead coach for the associations Checking Clinics. Brian also has worked with Victoria based hockey schools.

Brian hails orginally from Mississagua, Ontario and played his minor hockey in the very competive MTHL.


Richard Kirk-Progressive Goaltending Instructor

Ricard Kirk has 8 years experiece as a goalie instructor. Richard has always been a student of the positon and has made a seamless trasition from playing Jr. hockey to teaching it. His keen eye for the teaching aspect has taken him overseas to Finland and Sweden, along with working with local minor hockey association throughout BC. Richard curently resides in Victoria, BC.

Andy Seppanen-Progressive Goaltending Instructor

Andy Seppanen has maintained his passion for the game by teaching kids of all ages the funamentals of goaltending for the last 9 years. After Andy was awarded the AHJHL Playoff MVP in his final year as a player, he has pursued a career in coaching. Having provided minor hockey associations with goaltender clinics, coached Bantam AAA, and worked various hockey schools as goalie instructor. Andy was raised in Campbell River, BC and curently makes his home in Victoria, BC.


Bill Ruggiero - Goalie Instructor

Bill has an extensive playing history from Major Junior in the OHL and QMJHL, along with pro experience in the AHL, ECHL, CHL, UHL, IHL, and he also attended NHL training camp with the Nashville Predators.

He has conducted numerous camps and clinics in the USA/Canada and his hometown of Detroit, Michigan.

Bill is very proud of sister, Angela Ruggiero, who is regarded as one of the best women’s hockey players in the world and a multiply Olympic and IIHF World Championship medalist.


Dayna Harstad - Dryland Instructor

Acres Hockey is very honoured to have Dayna’s services for all programs since 2008 and look forward to her involvement in 2010 and beyond. Dayna is a Canadian Champion in Tae Kwon Do and has represented her country at World Championships; she was a bronze medalist at the 2004 Pam-Am Games in the Dominican Republic.

Dayna currently stays on top of her game by assisting Tae Kwon Do Canada as a Jr. National Team Coach along with being an athlete representative that brings her in contact with Olympic and National team member in various sports.

Dayna is a registered personal trainer with ISSA and NCCP Level 2 coach. She enjoys working with athletes of all abilities and helping them achieve their goals.

Dayna is a Parksville native.

Kevin Spicer-Dryland Instructor-BSc,BEd,MEd,BCRPA-PFT

Kevin joined AHT for all AHT Programs in 2009.

Kevin is a KSS teacher and registered Personal Trainer with big-time ideas and enthusiasm for developing athletic skills in youth. Kevin runs Parksville Area youth camps under the name Team Achieve.

Kevin has recently published training manuals for teachers and fitness professionals directly related to youth training and development.
